Rome-based Agora Labs has raised a €4.3m funding round led by P101 SGR, with the Mussetto family, owners of Infinite Five, also participating. The company will use the capital to expand its hospital network across Europe and the United States, enter the Middle East and India, and hire about 20 people across technical and commercial roles.
Clinical data stays inside the hospital
Agora Labs is building infrastructure that lets hospitals make clinical data available for medical research without moving raw patient records into a central repository. Its official product material says each clinical centre runs a local node that structures, standardises and anonymises information while the hospital controls who can use it, for what purpose and for how long. Researchers and life-science companies can then run multi-centre studies or train and validate models across participating sites.
The company grew out of European research programmes focused on privacy-preserving computation and federated learning. Reporting on the round says commercial activity began in 2023 and the network now spans 50 healthcare facilities, including Harvard Medical School and Milan's San Raffaele Hospital. Agora plans to double that footprint to 100 facilities in the coming months.
Scaling the network means standardising deployments
Agora's commercial proposition depends on turning hospital-by-hospital integrations into a reusable network. A pharmaceutical or research customer gains more value when a study can reach several institutions and patient populations through one governed workflow, while hospitals retain control of their data. Each additional site can therefore improve the breadth of future projects rather than serving only one deployment.
That network effect is not automatic. Clinical records arrive in different formats, local approval processes vary, and research questions require consistent definitions across institutions. Agora's local-node design addresses the privacy and data-movement constraint; the next test is whether installation, data mapping and study activation can become repeatable enough to support the planned expansion without a matching increase in bespoke implementation work.
The company says active projects include analysis of hospital-pharmacy and care-pathway data in Italy, and a Saudi Arabian study combining genetic, clinical and radiological information to develop predictive models for diabetes complications. These examples show the range the network is meant to support, but they also make execution quality central: useful multi-centre evidence depends on comparable data and clearly governed access at every participating institution.
Agora Labs was founded in Rome in 2022 by clinician and biomedical informatics specialist Davide Zaccagnini and privacy researcher Minos Garofalakis; its current leadership also includes chief business officer Fabio Giulietto. P101 partner Stefano Guidotti said the investment fits the firm's thesis that AI can reduce the friction between where clinical data is produced and where it is used for research. The financing gives Agora resources to test whether that model can travel across more hospitals and health systems while preserving the controls that make the network viable.
