Helsinki-based Ambio has raised €5.1m in seed funding to expand its procurement service for recycled plastics. Tech Funding News reports that b2venture led the round, with Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures participating. The capital will support international expansion and a broader range of polymers.
Ambio connects manufacturers with European recyclers, but it does not operate as a passive listing marketplace. The company handles sourcing, technical data, quality testing, logistics and long-term delivery, acting as the buyer’s single counterparty. Its software uses matching tools to connect material specifications with available recycled feedstock.
Recycled plastic has a procurement problem
Manufacturers need consistent volumes and properties, while recycled supply varies by source, batch and processing history. That makes price discovery and quality assurance harder than purchasing standard virgin resin. Ambio’s model combines a supplier network with internal testing and transaction responsibility, aiming to make recycled material easier to specify and dependable enough for recurring industrial use.
The company currently serves construction and packaging customers across the Nordics and Germany and recently entered France. Its catalogue includes recycled polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS, polystyrene and polycarbonate grades sourced from European suppliers.
Scale depends on repeatable quality, not just matching
Ambio was founded in 2023 by Tommi Bergström and Elmo Pakkanen. Bergström argues that greater use of recycled plastics can reduce Europe’s dependence on imported fossil feedstock. The funding gives the company room to extend coverage, but each new geography and polymer increases the burden of verifying specifications and delivery reliability.
AI can help match fragmented offers to buyer requirements, yet the commercial moat will sit in the operating layer around that match: testing, supplier performance data, logistics and accountability when a batch falls short. International expansion will show whether those controls can scale without recreating the cost and opacity Ambio is trying to remove.
