$1.4m · Pre-Seed · Deeptech · Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona-based Arq has raised $1.4m in Pre-Seed funding from Big Sur Ventures and Ground State Ventures. The company is developing quantum-repeaters and networking hardware intended to carry quantum information across fibre networks over distances that direct transmission cannot reliably cover.
Repeaters are the missing middle of quantum networks
Quantum computers can exchange information through entangled photons, but loss in optical fibre limits how far that state can travel. Classical networks solve an equivalent problem by reading and regenerating signals; quantum information cannot simply be copied. Arq is working on hardware that stores entanglement in rare-earth-doped crystals and connects shorter fibre links into a longer network.
The company’s technical proposition is multiplexing: operating across multiple temporal or spectral modes so a repeater can make several attempts at establishing entanglement rather than waiting on one channel at a time. If the hardware can improve the rate at which usable links are created, network operators can reduce the idle time that otherwise compounds across each hop.
Laboratory performance must become deployable hardware
The round funds a difficult transition from physics experiments to network equipment. A commercial repeater must preserve quantum states, interface with telecom fibre and operate repeatedly outside a tightly controlled laboratory. It must also fit into a network architecture whose standards, customers and procurement cycles are still emerging.
That creates a staged commercial path. Research networks and infrastructure programmes can validate the hardware before a broad quantum-internet market exists, while partnerships with component suppliers and telecom operators can shape the interfaces a deployable system requires. Arq’s advantage will depend on turning its memory and multiplexing approach into reproducible modules, not only demonstrating the underlying effect.
