Berlin-based x-cardiac has rebranded as Ascléa and closed an undisclosed Series A to broaden its work from cardiac-surgery risk prediction into AI for everyday clinical operations. Existing backer IBB Ventures and business angels joined the round with new investors Quercus and Catalpa Ventures. The investor announcement says the capital will fund product development.
From predictive devices to a hospital AI layer
x-cardiac built AI-based medical devices for predicting complications after cardiac surgery. Ascléa says two of those devices are CE-certified and already on the market. The new product direction expands beyond a defined prediction task towards a platform called Clé, intended to let hospitals run language models and agentic AI under their own control.
Hospitals can deploy Clé in their own data centre or through European sovereign-cloud providers, according to the company. The platform is designed to connect with existing clinical IT systems so models can use relevant records and automate knowledge work without raw hospital data being handed to a public AI service.
Control is part of the product
For hospitals, the constraint on generative AI is not only model capability. Patient data, clinical accountability and ageing IT systems make deployment and governance central to any purchase. Ascléa's on-premise and sovereign-cloud options address where data and models run, while its experience with regulated medical devices gives the company a starting point for evidence, risk management and clinical workflows.
The commercial opportunity is broader than selling another point solution, but so is the delivery burden. A platform must integrate with different hospital systems, identity controls and documentation practices. If each installation requires extensive custom engineering, services work can grow as quickly as recurring software revenue. The useful product layer will be the one Ascléa can standardise across hospitals while leaving each institution in control of data and permitted actions.
The rebrand marks that strategic shift clearly: x-cardiac's specialist cardiac products become proof that the team can build for a clinical environment, while Clé is the attempt to reuse that expertise across more tasks and departments. The Series A gives Ascléa room to build the platform and show that sovereign deployment can move hospital AI from isolated pilots into dependable daily workflows.
