€7.8m · Other round · Deeptech · San Sebastian, Spain
BATTIA, a Gipuzkoa-based developer of electric-vehicle battery recycling technology, has secured €7.8m through Spain's PERTE RENOCICLA programme. The company is building a process to recover high-purity critical materials from end-of-life batteries and plans a 1,000-tonne-per-year pilot plant.
Recovery quality determines whether recycling closes the loop
Battery recycling creates strategic value only when recovered lithium, nickel, cobalt and other inputs can return to demanding industrial supply chains. BATTIA's challenge is therefore not simply processing waste. It must preserve enough material value and purity for reuse, while moving from laboratory development towards a continuous plant that manufacturers can qualify.
The award funds that industrial proof point. BATTIA targets technology-readiness level six in 2027, with a pilot designed to show recovery performance at meaningful throughput. If the process meets quality and cost requirements, the plant can become a reference for larger deployments. That would connect Europe's recycling ambition to a domestic source of usable battery materials rather than a lower-value waste stream.
