€30m · Other round · Healthtech · Munich, Germany
Munich-based Ethris has secured a €30m financing agreement with the European Investment Bank under HERA Invest, backed by the European Commission's Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority. The capital will advance Ethris' respiratory mRNA portfolio, including its lead antiviral candidate ETH47 and mucosal influenza vaccine programmes ETH52 and ETH53.
ETH47 is in a Phase 2a asthma trial, with the financing intended to support Phase 2b studies in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The candidate encodes interferon lambda and is designed to stimulate local antiviral immune defences in the airways rather than target a specific viral protein. Clinical and regulatory success remain to be demonstrated.
Clinical financing is tied to evidence milestones
For a clinical-stage biotech, €30m matters less as general runway than as funding for the next evidence step. Moving ETH47 from Phase 2a into Phase 2b would test whether local airway delivery can produce a meaningful antiviral effect in patients with asthma and COPD, concentrating execution risk in trial design, enrolment and data quality.
The HERA-backed EIB agreement links Ethris' programme to Europe's pandemic-preparedness priorities while avoiding the framing of a conventional equity round. That capital can support several respiratory programmes, but it also raises the bar for milestone discipline: value will depend on converting public financing into reproducible clinical evidence across distinct indications.
