Fruga, a Manchester insurtech building retention and engagement infrastructure for insurers, has raised £1m in funding from NPIF II – PXN Equity Finance and Haatch. According to PXN Ventures, the capital will support product development, team growth and relationships with insurers and other distribution partners.
Insurance rewards become a retention product
Fruga lets policyholders connect a bank account, credit card or debit card to their insurance policy through open banking. Purchases with participating travel, supermarket and high-street brands generate “insurance credits” that can be applied at renewal; the company says the discount can exceed £150, depending on spending and available partners.
Money Expert is already using the technology, while insurers can embed it under their own brand. That distinction matters commercially. A comparison site concentrates the customer relationship around price at the moment of purchase; Fruga is trying to create useful contact throughout the policy year. Credits give policyholders a visible reason to return, while permissioned transaction signals can help an insurer recognise when a customer may need another type of cover.
The model therefore links consumer value with retention and distribution. If the rewards are meaningful enough to change renewal behaviour, insurers may be able to spread acquisition costs across a longer customer relationship and offer relevant products before a policyholder starts a new search. The execution test is measurable: Fruga and its partners will need to show that engagement becomes higher renewal rates or additional sales without weakening consent, data protection or customer trust.
Funding moves Fruga beyond its first deployment
PXN says Fruga was bootstrapped before this round and has built a pipeline of household insurers and managing general agents. The company expects key hires in the first quarter of 2027. Money Expert provides an initial deployment, but converting that pipeline will determine whether the product can move from a partner programme to infrastructure used across the insurance market.
The investors are backing a specific industry problem rather than a generic rewards layer. PXN Ventures points to the limited contact most insurers have with customers outside claims and renewals, while Haatch highlights the combination of retention incentives and customer insight. The £1m round gives Fruga resources to test whether that combination travels across carriers without each deployment becoming a bespoke integration.
