Bilbao-based H2SITE has secured €3.4m (NOK 39.1m) in Enova funding for HydraNord Power, a project to develop and validate a commercial-scale onboard ammonia-to-power system. Led by H2SITE, the project will combine ammonia cracking and hydrogen separation to produce up to one tonne of high-purity hydrogen per day for maritime fuel cells delivering 700 kW of net electrical power. Development and integration are planned during 2027, with commissioning at Energy House in Stord in early 2028.
The commercial step is repeatable auxiliary power
Shipping's ammonia proposition depends not only on storing a hydrogen carrier, but on turning it into clean fuel-cell feed without an oversized processing plant. H2SITE combines cracking and hydrogen separation in one membrane reactor. A 700 kW system takes that design into an auxiliary-power range that vessel owners can evaluate against batteries, engines and shore-power constraints.
Commercial leverage will come from standardisation across vessel classes. The consortium gives H2SITE access to ship requirements, design, integration and testing before commissioning in early 2028. If one module can be repeated and combined for larger loads, each deployment should require less bespoke engineering; if onboard integration varies heavily by vessel, project capacity will limit the pace of fleet rollout.
