Infera Neuro, a spinout from EPFL’s Integrated Neurotechnologies Laboratory at Campus Biotech in Geneva, has received CHF50,000 in grant funding from the FONGIT Innovation Fund. The project is developing specialised chips for non-invasive interfaces intended to translate brain activity into speech. The award will support incorporation in Geneva and the next stage of chip design.
A small grant at a consequential hardware milestone
Infera’s approach places neural decoding on a specialised chip, aiming to reduce the power and delay involved in sending signals to external computing systems. That matters for a future wearable speech interface, where the electronics must fit around the person using it. The broader deeptech theme is the translation of laboratory research into components that another team can build into a usable product.
For Infera, this grant funds an early step in that translation: establishing the company and advancing its design. A stronger prototype could help the team engage development partners and future investors around a concrete technical result. Demonstrating a chip’s performance and establishing a complete interface’s clinical usefulness remain separate milestones.
