$3.8m · Other round · Healthtech · London, UK
London-founded Juno Bio has raised $3.8m in funding from Ada Ventures, Artesian, Entrepreneur First and Illumina Accelerator. The financing supports the opening of its first CLIA-certified sequencing laboratory dedicated to women’s health in Oakland, California, bringing the company’s vaginal microbiome testing in-house.
Owning the laboratory changes the product
Juno Bio sells an at-home test that uses next-generation sequencing to profile bacteria and fungi in the vaginal microbiome. Customers collect a swab at home, receive results through an online dashboard and can discuss them with a health coach. The company says its current test screens more than 10,000 microbes, while US results are reviewed through its CLIA-certified laboratory.
Moving sequencing into a dedicated lab is more than a capacity investment. It gives Juno Bio tighter control over sample handling, turnaround times and quality systems, while creating a direct path from the testing workflow into research and product development. That can shorten the feedback loop between what the lab observes and how the company improves its reports, but it also adds the fixed costs and compliance burden of operating clinical infrastructure.
Clinical utility is the scaling test
The commercial challenge is to make a detailed microbiome profile useful to customers and clinicians, not merely informative. Juno Bio combines results with coaching and, for eligible US customers, a route to physician review and prescriptions. That service layer can increase the value of each test and support repeat testing, while requiring careful boundaries between wellness information, laboratory-developed testing and medical decision-making.
The new lab therefore becomes the company’s main execution test. Higher throughput should improve unit economics only if Juno Bio can maintain quality and convert faster, more consistent results into durable clinical and customer trust. The financing buys control over that process rather than outsourcing the most important operational layer of the product.
