MMI, the developer of the Symani robotic microsurgery platform, has secured €17m in Series B investment from Angelini Ventures and the European Investment Bank. Symani combines very small wristed instruments with motion scaling and tremor reduction for procedures on structures as small as 0.1mm.
Precision expands the addressable surgery
Microsurgery is constrained by what a surgeon can see and manipulate reliably. MMI's platform translates larger hand movements into smaller instrument movements, creating access to delicate vessels and tissue where manual dexterity becomes a limiting factor. The commercial value is therefore not automation alone, but enabling more clinicians to perform technically demanding procedures with a consistent operating setup.
Adoption depends on more than regulatory clearance. Hospitals need training, procedure volume and evidence that clinical benefits justify capital equipment and operating costs. MMI already manufactures its system in Pisa and sells internationally. The new investment can support the installed base and clinical expansion; utilisation will determine whether precision robotics becomes a specialist tool or a broader surgical platform.
