£22.2m · Series C · Cleantech · Oxford, UK
Oxford-based Moa Technology has raised £22.2m in Series C financing to advance its pipeline of new herbicide technologies. Oxford Science Enterprises and Supernova Invest co-led the round, with new backing from Agri Investment Fund, GrainInnovate, Infinity Investment Partners and Magdalen College Oxford. Existing investors Oxford Science Enterprises, Lansdowne Partners, Parkwalk and Oxford University Innovation also participated. Moa says the capital will move its three most advanced programmes closer to commercialisation, expand its earlier discovery pipeline and develop its Moa Amplifiers programme.
Moving weed-control discovery towards products
Moa develops herbicides designed to act through biological mechanisms that differ from those used by existing products. Its plant-led discovery process starts with miniaturised plants, then uses biochemical and computational tools to validate promising compounds before glasshouse, field and longer development trials. The company reports that its GALAXY platform has screened more than 900,000 compounds and identified over 80 promising novel mode-of-action areas.
That breadth matters commercially only if candidates survive the long path from a screening hit to a product that works across crops, soils, climates and resistant weed populations. Moa says its leading programmes have progressed through laboratory and glasshouse validation and are performing in successive seasons of international field trials. The Series C therefore finances translation rather than discovery alone: it gives the company more capacity to generate the efficacy, safety, formulation and manufacturing evidence required before registration and sale.
Moa Amplifiers add a second route to market. The company says these compounds are not herbicidal by themselves but could reduce the amount or concentration of herbicide needed. If validated, that could let crop-protection partners improve existing products while Moa's new standalone modes of action continue through development. It also creates different partnership options around established active ingredients and new chemistry.
Partnerships carry science into distribution
Since June 2024, Moa has announced R&D collaborations with Certis Belchim, Gowan, Nufarm and Corteva. Those relationships connect Moa's discovery platforms with companies that already have development, registration and distribution capabilities. They also shape the financing model: the company says upfront and milestone payments from current and future partners will supplement the new equity.
The model can spread development cost and give Moa routes into multiple markets, but each programme still depends on repeatable field performance and partner commitment through later-stage testing. The immediate Series C milestone is not a launched herbicide. It is whether Moa can turn its discovery volume and early field results into a smaller set of programmes that partners can register, manufacture and sell.
