Pulheim-based Phagestack has secured an undisclosed equity investment from NRW.BANK through its NRW.SeedCon programme. The biotech combines machine learning and a phage database with biological agents and laboratory services to develop targeted antimicrobials against harmful bacteria.
The financing has supported the opening of Phagestack's own laboratory at BioCampus Cologne. The company says the facility lets it connect digital candidate selection with in-house phage isolation and characterisation, in-vitro screening, genomic verification and production-related services. Founded in 2023 by Ewald Fernbach, Jonas Fernbach and Robert Faber, Phagestack sees potential applications in healthcare, aquaculture, agriculture and food production.
Wet-lab validation changes what Phagestack can sell
A database can help narrow the search for bacteriophages that target a particular bacterium, but customers still need evidence that a selected candidate works under controlled conditions. Bringing experimental validation in-house shortens the loop between computational ranking and laboratory results, giving Phagestack a way to improve its data while delivering a broader service to partners.
The commercial test is whether that tighter loop produces repeatable results faster than customers could assemble through separate data and laboratory providers. The new lab expands Phagestack from a discovery resource towards an integrated workflow, but it also adds operational demands around assay quality, reproducibility and capacity. NRW.BANK's backing therefore finances both scientific validation and the infrastructure needed to turn candidate selection into a dependable service.
