Phosphoenix, an Amsterdam-based medical technology company developing a neuroprosthetic system for people with profound blindness, has raised €1.3m in financing from TTT MedTech Fund, FIRST Fund, Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland and new investor ROM InWest. The funding will support preparations for a first-in-human clinical study and further development of its neurostimulation system.
Clinical validation is the next value step
Phosphoenix aims to bypass retinal or optic-nerve damage by stimulating the lateral geniculate nucleus, a relay centre in the brain’s visual pathway. Its proprietary Fountain Probe incorporates more than 1,000 microelectrodes and is designed for implantation using stereotactic neurosurgical techniques that build on established deep-brain-stimulation approaches. The engineering challenge now moves from preclinical response to repeatable clinical delivery.
This €1.3m round is preparation capital for that transition, rather than evidence of commercial readiness. A first-in-human study could turn preclinical signals into the initial safety, usability and response data needed to shape a larger clinical programme and the planned Series A. Delays or design changes at this stage would also affect the amount and timing of follow-on capital.
