$2.4m · Seed · Fashion · Bristol, UK
Bristol-based Ponda has raised $2.4m in Seed funding, co-led by Faber VC and Counteract, with PDS Ventures, Evenlode Impact and the Royal College of Art participating. Ponda said the capital would move its BioPuff plant-based insulation from pilot to commercial scale, expand its European grower network and support commercial lines for Autumn/Winter 2026 collections.
The company announced the round on 24 November 2025. A later July 2026 report repeated the same $2.4m/£1.8m financing and investor group; it is not a separate round.
The material starts with a farming system
BioPuff is made from Typha, also known as bulrush or cattail, grown on rewetted wetlands. Ponda's proposition links two normally separate supply chains: landowners cultivate a crop on wet ground, while fashion brands receive a plant-based alternative to animal down and synthetic insulation. The material therefore has to work both as a textile input and as a reliable outlet for wetland agriculture.
Ponda said its Bristol facility already included fibre-processing and prototyping capability, and named Berghaus, Stella McCartney, Parley for the Oceans and Sheep Inc among brands that had prototyped garments or tested BioPuff. Those collaborations are company-reported validation, not proof of repeat commercial orders, but they place the material inside real product-development workflows rather than leaving it as a laboratory sample.
The commercial mechanism depends on coordinating more than production volume. Ponda needs growers able to establish and harvest Typha, processing capacity that can turn variable biomass into consistent fibre, and brands willing to specify the insulation across collections. Scaling one link without the others could leave the company with too little feedstock, underused machinery or material that has not yet cleared a buyer's performance and procurement requirements.
Capital for the pilot-to-product transition
The Seed round was intended to finance that coordination. Ponda said it would increase manufacturing capacity, strengthen its network of wetland growers across Europe and launch commercial BioPuff lines for Autumn/Winter 2026. The announcement describes planned milestones at the time of the round, not completed production or deliveries.
Ponda began as a collaborative research project at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art. Moving from that research base into commercial material supply changes the execution test: success depends on repeatable quality, grower economics and fashion-production schedules aligning at the same time. If Ponda can make those parts dependable, each new brand programme can create demand for both insulation and restored wetland acreage. If any part remains project-specific, growth will look more like bespoke materials development than a scalable supply chain.
