€1m · Other round · Deeptech · Bari, Italy
Bari-based QSENSATO has raised €1m through a SAFE investment from Quantonation and Deep Ocean Capital. The University of Bari spin-off will use the financing to establish an in-house fabrication facility at the TecnoPolis Science and Technology Park in Valenzano, near Bari. The site is expected to become operational by the end of 2026; the company also plans to expand its R&D, engineering and management teams.
QSENSATO makes custom atomic vapor cells: small chambers that hold atomic vapour so light can interrogate it for highly precise measurements. Its laser-written process can create three-dimensional structures inside transparent material and integrate them with photonic or microfluidic components. The company says the cells can be tailored for magnetometers, radio-frequency electric-field sensors, frequency references, miniaturised atomic clocks and gyroscopes.
The manufacturing bottleneck
The commercial question is less whether quantum sensing works in a laboratory than whether its enabling components can be produced repeatably, at useful volumes and in application-specific geometries. Bringing fabrication in-house should give QSENSATO tighter control over process iteration and production as it moves from rapid prototypes towards wafer-scale manufacturing. That matters because vapor cells sit inside several types of atomic sensor; a repeatable component platform could let the company serve multiple sensing applications without building every end product itself.
The step is still prospective. The new facility is planned for operation by year-end rather than already running, so execution now depends on commissioning the fab and demonstrating that the patented process transfers from prototypes to consistent output. QSENSATO has also signed a research agreement with Italy’s National Institute of Metrological Research, INRiM, to support validation of the fabrication process for quantum sensing and metrology.
From university IP to an industrial supplier
QSENSATO says it was founded in 2024 around vapor-cell technology developed through collaboration between ICFO and CNR-IFN. Its official history records a prior €500k pre-seed round and the start of business operations and rapid prototyping in early 2025. The latest SAFE follows that research-to-company transition: the financing is aimed at the production capability needed to turn patented fabrication know-how into components customers can specify and buy.
