Leuven-based Relu, which automates design and administrative work for dental laboratories, has raised a $1.75m strategic investment from Dental Innovation Alliance (DIA). The investor said the capital will strengthen Relu's position in the US market, where the company has operated a Boston office since 2024.
Automation turns technician capacity into throughput
Relu Automate is a pay-per-case platform for work including night guards, crowns and dental models. Rather than selling directly to every dentist, Relu works with laboratories and dental software providers, embedding its technology into the systems that already handle a case. Its earlier Relu Engine product can be delivered as an API, software-development kit or Docker container, according to KU Leuven's account of the company's development.
The commercial mechanism is capacity rather than novelty. Dental labs can only accept as much work as technicians can design, check and move through production. Relu says its software now handles more than one million cases a year for labs in 82 countries. If automation lets existing technicians complete more cases, the customer can increase output without hiring at the same pace; a pay-per-case price also keeps Relu's revenue tied to that throughput. Those figures and productivity claims come from the company and investor, but they explain why the funding is focused on distribution in the US rather than on proving a first product.
A repeat investor brings industry distribution
DIA also participated in Relu's €2m seed round in 2023. The follow-on investment matters because DIA's backers include dental operators, giving it a view into how laboratories and multi-site groups buy and deploy software. DIA managing partner Thomas Sharpe said lab operators among the fund's investors had seen Relu's automation in use and pointed to growing adoption by American labs.
Relu was founded in 2019 after its team moved from general computer-vision consulting into dental imaging. The company says it launched its first product and international sales in 2021, added its integration-focused Engine in 2022 and began North American sales in 2023. The next execution test is whether its US push can turn that installed workflow into repeatable lab adoption while preserving the design quality and integration reliability that customers need for production work.
