London-based RunPilot has secured £140k in early-stage funding after a pitch to the University of Sheffield board. The university spin-out will use the backing for product development, technical recruitment and commercial growth, including a planned sales-director hire.
RunPilot builds planning software for consultancies, network operators and infrastructure owners. Its platform generates and compares route, connection, network and phasing options against geospatial constraints, cost surfaces, engineering scenarios and consenting risks. The company grew from more than five years of infrastructure-modelling and optimisation research at the University of Sheffield.
Planning software is most valuable before routes harden
Infrastructure projects become more expensive to change as engineering assumptions, land constraints and consultation evidence accumulate. RunPilot is trying to move comparison earlier, giving planners a shared model for testing routes and network options before redesign becomes costly. That turns geospatial analysis from a reporting step into part of early commercial and delivery decisions.
The adoption challenge is auditability. Consultancies and network operators need to understand why one option ranks above another and preserve evidence as constraints change. If RunPilot can fit that review process, each project can deepen its data on costs, objections and deliverability. The funding is modest, but targeted hires could help translate a research system into repeatable customer deployments.
