Safehire.ai has secured a £500k follow-on investment from a private investor, bringing total funding to £1.55m after a £1.05m seed round closed in April 2025. The London-based company said it will use the new capital to expand its Digital Risk Screening platform beyond education, support larger enterprise deployments, develop an insider-risk capability and prepare for expansion into other jurisdictions.
From screening throughput to defensible decisions
Safehire.ai searches open-source data across the surface, deep and dark web, applies AI-assisted context, and sends findings through human verification by analysts with military-intelligence training. The company positions the resulting reports as a complement to statutory checks, references and human judgement rather than a replacement for them.
The company says its platform can conduct more than 10,000 searches a day, compared with 15 for a single human analyst. It also cites a large multi-academy trust that reported saving about one hour of HR time per candidate. Those are company-reported figures, but they show the commercial mechanism: software widens search capacity while specialist review concentrates scarce human attention on relevance and context.
The product's harder scaling problem is not simply finding more signals. It is turning those signals into decisions that employers can justify. UK Information Commissioner's Office guidance describes pre-employment vetting as particularly intrusive and says it should be proportionate to a specific risk, transparent to candidates and limited to the minimum necessary information. The regulator also says online findings should not determine a hiring decision on their own and candidates should be able to respond.
That makes Safehire.ai's analyst-verification layer more than a quality-control feature. It is part of the product's commercial case for high-trust employers that need speed without delegating judgement entirely to an automated system. As the company moves from education into enterprise and insider-risk use cases, consistency in what gets surfaced, documented and challenged will matter as much as search throughput.
Safehire.ai was founded by Simon Holden, a former school bursar and cybersecurity founder, and Sean Lumley, a technology entrepreneur who co-founded CybSafe. The pair met as British Army officers, an experience the company says informed its intelligence-led workflow. The new funding therefore backs both expansion and a test of whether that workflow can travel into more regulated customer environments without losing proportionality.
