Zurich-based SeaSON Energy, which develops sodium-hydroxide seasonal heat storage for buildings and industry, has secured an undisclosed financing round from a private investor. Contemporaneous reporting described the investment as a single-digit-million amount, without naming a currency or the investor. Transaction adviser Pestalozzi later said the capital would support further product development, commercialisation and DACH market entry.
Seasonal storage has to become a repeatable building product
SeaSON’s system stores energy chemically rather than holding hot water at temperature. During charging, renewable electricity or heat concentrates a sodium-hydroxide solution; the solution and separated water can then remain at room temperature until recombination releases useful heat. The company says the design reaches about 280 kWh per cubic metre, depending on operating temperatures, and up to six times the heat capacity of a hot-water tank.
That density matters only if the hardware integrates reliably into real properties. SeaSON lists a 5 kW pilot supporting a building heat pump in Frauenfeld and a 36 kW installation using three units, geothermal probes and rooftop solar at a Swiss Post distribution centre in Kaltenbach. HEV Schweiz also reported that systems had been installed in early 2026 for a 36-home development in Bochum.
The commercial proposition is therefore more than selling a storage vessel. Customers need a system designed around their building, heat source, controls and seasonal demand. For SeaSON, the route from pilots to repeatable revenue depends on standardising installation without losing the flexibility needed for retrofits, commercial properties and industrial heat. The financing can help turn field performance into reference designs that installers and property owners can evaluate before committing capital.
Market entry follows years of applied development
SeaSON Energy was formed in late 2025 by Matica AG and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts after earlier development and pilot work. The funding announcement said the company planned to use the capital for market entry, with five to ten initial storage installations expected in 2027. That target makes execution measurable: successful deployments must show not just that heat can be stored across seasons, but that projects can be delivered, commissioned and operated consistently across different sites.
