€1.5m · Other round · HRtech · Magdeburg, Germany
Smycles has raised €1.5m in equity in a round led by Saxony-Anhalt’s IBG funds, managed by bmp Ventures, with two private investors participating on the same terms. The agreement was notarised on 28 September and announced on 20 October as Smycles moved its headquarters to Magdeburg.
Designing roles around work rather than titles
Smycles builds workforce-planning software for teams that combine employees and AI agents. Its premise is that organisations often assign people through job titles, availability and credentials without modelling the context of a task or how different capabilities work together.
The platform is intended to map work, skills and constraints, then help managers compose teams across human and machine contributors. As AI agents take on bounded workflows, that planning problem becomes more complex: a company needs to know what can be delegated, where judgement remains essential and who is accountable for the combined result.
The product must make recommendations explainable
More than €1m of the financing is scheduled to be invested at the new Magdeburg location over 18 months. The capital will support product development and the team as Smycles commercialises its approach.
Workforce decisions affect careers, pay and organisational power, so an optimisation score is not enough. Customers will need to understand why the software recommends a particular team, which data shaped the result and whether historical bias is being reproduced. Smycles can create value if it helps managers test scenarios and expose trade-offs while leaving responsibility visible. The risk is that a planning tool becomes a black box that presents subjective choices as objective staffing logic.
