£5m · Other round · Fintech · London, UK
London-based SPORTA has secured £5m in follow-on investment from the Lazaroo-Hood Group. The family office becomes the company’s largest shareholder alongside its founders and will join the SPORTA Group board, according to the company announcement.
Building the operating stack before a sports bank
SPORTA is developing financial and digital infrastructure for clubs, athletes, fans, families and grassroots organisations. Its stated ambition is to become the UK’s first fully authorised bank dedicated to sport, but that remains subject to regulatory approval. SPORTA is not yet a bank and says no banking products or services are currently available.
The new capital will fund team, technology, partnerships and operating foundations. SPORTA has appointed leaders across risk, finance, information technology, commercial operations and engineering, with some roles also subject to regulatory approval. Those hires show where the immediate work sits: governance and controls are as central to the proposition as the customer-facing product.
A sports-focused bank could tailor accounts, payments and digital tools to irregular revenues, membership models and the mix of volunteers, organisations and professionals found across the sector. The commercial question is whether that specialisation creates enough customer value to justify building regulated infrastructure instead of distributing products through an existing bank.
Follow-on capital deepens one strategic relationship
Lazaroo-Hood Group led SPORTA’s seed round in 2025 and describes itself as a long-term strategic partner. Its follow-on investment concentrates ownership and board involvement with a backer that already knows the regulatory and operating plan. That can speed decisions, but the next milestone is external: SPORTA must translate the capital and senior appointments into an authorisation-ready business.
The company’s execution risk is therefore unusually binary for an early fintech. Product development can continue, but the central banking proposition cannot launch until regulators approve the institution and relevant leadership appointments. Until then, SPORTA’s value lies in demonstrating that its governance, technology and customer design are robust enough for a regulated financial business serving the sports economy.
