$1.19m · Seed · Cleantech · London, UK
London-based StratX, which is building engineered covers for methane-emitting landfills, has raised $1.19m in Seed funding. The round was led by Neglected Climate Opportunities, the Grantham Environmental Trust's venture vehicle, with participation from CarbonFix and an initial carbon-credit purchase commitment from Terraset. The capital will support pilot projects in Africa and South America, including sites being assessed in Tanzania, Colombia and Chile.
Making methane control pay for itself
StratX targets uncovered landfills and dumpsites that are poorly served by conventional gas-capture infrastructure. Its covers combine locally available soil and gravel with microbes that oxidise methane before it escapes. The company also plans to use alkaline materials, including crushed concrete, to bind carbon dioxide through mineralisation. Its measurement layer is intended to quantify the avoided emissions and support the issuance of carbon credits.
The commercial model matters as much as the biochemistry. StratX says it will finance and operate the systems at no upfront cost to landfill operators, then sell the resulting credits and share revenue with operators, host governments and local communities. That structure shifts the purchasing decision away from a capital budget that many municipalities do not have. In return, StratX takes on the delivery, monitoring and credit-market risk.
This makes verified performance the central business constraint. The company must show that its covers work across landfills with different climates, waste composition and operating practices, while producing measurements that buyers and registries accept. A low-cost cover can expand the addressable market, but only if methane reductions remain measurable and durable enough to support reliable credit revenue.
From field pilots to repeatable projects
The funding moves StratX from technical development into field deployment. CarbonFix says the first pilot is expected in early 2027; the company is also working through site selection in the Global South. Those projects need to establish more than scientific efficacy. They must show how quickly a cover can be installed, what monitoring costs look like, how local operators participate and how long it takes to turn verified reductions into revenue.
StratX was developed with support from Deep Science Ventures and is led by founder and CEO Kevin Wheeler. Neglected Climate Opportunities' investment places the company in a category of climate infrastructure where the avoided emission is valuable but the asset owner may not be able to pay. Terraset's purchase commitment gives the pilots an early demand signal, although it does not remove the need to prove credit quality and project economics.
If the pilots succeed, the repeatable unit is not just the cover. It is a full project package combining site assessment, local installation, methane measurement, verification and credit sales. The Seed round is financing that first proof of delivery.
