$20m · Other round · Deeptech · London, UK
London-based Unit1 Studio has secured $20m in a financing package combining an oversubscribed equity round led by Balderton Capital with additional production financing for avatar concerts in development.
Existing investors Mercuri, Gilston Music and former U2 manager Paul McGuinness participated, while Saul Klein joined as a new investor. Unit1 said the capital will support research and development, intellectual-property and licensing agreements, and a wider roster of mixed-reality concerts.
The company produces shows in which synthesized 3D performers appear on large LED screens alongside live musicians, lighting, sound and physical staging. It has tested the format with KT Tunstall and says it moved the production between two London venues in four days.
Portability changes the production equation
Avatar concerts have so far looked more like destination infrastructure than touring content: ABBA Voyage depends on a purpose-built venue, and that fixed footprint concentrates development cost and audience demand in one location. Unit1's technical claim is that the digital performance and live-stage system can be relocated, replicated and adapted to smaller venues.
If that holds in ticketed productions, each show can address more markets without rebuilding the entire experience for every city. The commercial constraint then shifts from venue engineering toward rights, production financing and sustained ticket demand. That explains why this package mixes company equity with project-level production capital, and why securing artist and estate licences is as important as improving the CGI.
