Urban Zoo has secured a £20m investment from BGF to develop its sports technology and expand internationally, with North America a particular focus. The investor announcement says the Warrington company already serves more than 60 professional clubs and sports organisations.
One operating layer for the fan relationship
Urban Zoo builds Gamechanger, a platform used by clubs and federations to run websites, mobile apps, streaming, e-commerce and retail experiences. The product is intended to replace separate systems and content workflows with one platform and a shared view of fan activity.
That consolidation matters because a supporter’s relationship with a club crosses several channels. Match information and editorial content may drive an app visit, video can lead to a subscription, and merchandise or tickets create transactions. When those systems are disconnected, the organisation has less context for personalisation and must maintain integrations between multiple suppliers.
Gamechanger’s pitch is that a club can manage those surfaces together while retaining its own brand. Urban Zoo cites customers across English and Scottish football as well as darts, rugby league and motorsport. The breadth gives it reusable product components, but each sport and organisation still brings different rights, commerce and content requirements.
International growth tests repeatability
The UK customer base provides references for expansion, while BGF’s capital lets Urban Zoo invest in proprietary technology and the commercial work needed to enter new markets. North America is attractive because clubs and leagues have large digital audiences and mature commercial operations, but it also has established vendors and different league structures.
The operating question is how much of each deployment can remain standard. A platform becomes more valuable as shared features, data models and integrations improve for every customer. If international projects require extensive bespoke development, services work can grow faster than recurring software economics.
The £20m investment gives Urban Zoo room to strengthen the common platform while building local market coverage. Its next phase will be measured by whether Gamechanger can carry the same all-in-one proposition into new sports and countries without losing the configurability that won clubs in the first place.
