$9m · Seed · AI · Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam-based Vangrid, which is building a network for commissioning verified 3D captures of real-world locations, has raised $9m in seed funding. The round was structured as a simple agreement for future tokens and backed by HashKey Capital, Borderless Capital, Crypto.com Capital, Animoca Brands, Gate Labs and Mapleblock Capital. CEO Robert Brighton told The Block that fundraising began in August 2025, was completed in several tranches in January 2026 and was announced once the network was live. Vangrid plans to use the capital to expand the network and form partnerships with physical-AI infrastructure and application companies.
Turning capture requests into a data marketplace
Vangrid's documentation describes a two-sided workflow. Organisations post and fund bounties for specific places; contributors record short videos on ordinary phones; Vangrid reconstructs those submissions into 3D models. Each capture is fingerprinted with a content hash, coarse location and timestamp, then batched and anchored on Base so a buyer can check provenance against a public ledger. The product is aimed at robotics, autonomous agents and other systems that need recent ground-level spatial data that satellites or road-mapping fleets do not collect well.
The commercial mechanism is demand-led collection. A buyer asks for a defined location and pays for an accepted result, while the network recruits distributed contributors instead of owning a mapping fleet. That can make narrow or changing environments economical to capture, but the advantage depends on Vangrid maintaining enough contributor density, consistent reconstruction quality and credible verification. The ledger proves that a submitted fingerprint existed at a given point; customers will still judge whether the underlying model is accurate and useful for their systems.
Verification has to scale with supply
At the announcement, Brighton said Vangrid's public explorer showed close to 100,000 verified captures, 200,000 grid events and more than 1,300 batch attestations. The web and Android apps were live, while an iOS app was planned. He also said faces and licence plates were anonymised before data left a device, and that the company had signed a memorandum of understanding with unnamed strategic data partners. Those are company-reported milestones, but they identify the execution test for the seed capital: converting a broad contributor network into dependable, privacy-conscious data supply that enterprise buyers will commission repeatedly.
