$18m · Series B · Gaming · Dublin, Ireland
W4 Games, a Dublin-based provider of enterprise technology and support for the open-source Godot Engine, has raised an $18m Series B led by Tencent. OSS Capital, Lux Capital, Naval Ravikant and Tobias Lütke’s family office also participated. The company says it will expand its international team by 50%, accelerate its enterprise offering and support growing demand from developers using Godot.
The round takes W4 Games’ total funding to $33m. Alongside the investment, the company signed a multi-year partnership with Tencent covering go-to-market work, localisation, ecosystem support and developer adoption in Asia.
Commercial support turns open-source adoption into enterprise revenue
Godot is MIT-licensed and stewarded by an independent non-profit, so W4 Games cannot monetise access to the engine itself. Its opportunity sits around adoption: professional support, cloud services, console tooling and engineering work that larger studios need before committing an open-source engine to production. A broader developer base can expand that services market without putting the core software behind a licence fee.
The Tencent partnership adds regional distribution and localisation to that model. W4 Games says improvements developed for enterprise customers are contributed upstream where possible, which can strengthen the free engine and attract more users. The commercial test is whether W4 can turn that larger community into enough support and tooling contracts while preserving trust that customer work benefits, rather than captures, the shared ecosystem.
