AcouBatt, a London-based UCL spinout building acoustic-emission monitoring for battery cells, has raised £1.1m in pre-seed funding led by Creator Fund, with participation from Ada Ventures. The company will continue developing its sensing and analysis system and expand pilot programmes with battery manufacturers.
Listening during formation can move quality checks upstream
Battery formation can take up to two weeks, while voltage and current traces may not reveal every internal change. AcouBatt mounts passive sensors outside the cell and uses AI to classify acoustic emissions as they occur. That adds a non-invasive signal manufacturers can compare across cells and protocols before committing more time and energy to a questionable unit.
The commercial value depends on turning those signals into production decisions. Earlier anomaly detection can reduce scrap and downstream processing, while evidence that formation is complete could shorten conservative time buffers. AcouBatt says its approach could cut formation time by up to 30%; pilots at manufacturing scale will test whether that gain holds across different cell formats, chemistries and factory conditions.
