AquaNab, a Hamburg biotechnology startup developing precision immunotherapies for aquaculture, has secured an undisclosed investment from Nordic Foodtech VC. The financing will support the company’s lead programme as it works to complete proof of concept, expand collaborations with salmon producers, feed manufacturers and animal-health companies, and move its first products towards commercialisation.
Oral delivery is the commercial hinge
AquaNab’s first target is sea lice in Atlantic salmon. Instead of relying on chemical baths or mechanical delousing, the company is developing alpaca-derived nanoantibodies that can be mixed into feed. AquaNab describes the molecules as precision immunotherapies for aquaculture pathogens, and says its research has shown they can cross a fish’s intestinal barrier and enter the bloodstream, creating a route for both preventive and therapeutic use.
That delivery mechanism matters because a treatment that fits into feed could be deployed through infrastructure farms already use. But AquaNab is not yet selling a proven commercial product. CEO Ruth Tamara Montero told AgNavigator that oral delivery has been demonstrated, while efficacy testing remains the final major step in the proof-of-concept programme. She said commercialisation is still several years away and regulatory approval will be a major challenge.
The immediate commercial work therefore runs alongside the science. AquaNab is discussing collaborations and future field trials with salmon producers, while its stated use of funds includes work with feed manufacturers and animal-health companies. Those partners can help show whether the treatment performs in operating conditions, can be formulated consistently into feed, and fits the distribution and regulatory channels required for adoption. That is an interpretation of the execution path, not a claim that those milestones have already been achieved.
One pathogen is the first platform test
The company says the underlying platform could later be adapted to bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases across other aquaculture species. The present round does not validate that broader promise; it finances the narrower test that comes first: whether feed-delivered nanoantibodies can produce effective, repeatable results against sea lice in salmon.
Nordic Foodtech VC’s backing is its first investment outside the Nordic region, according to AquaNab and Tech.eu. The company has not disclosed the amount and says it is continuing to seek additional capital. For investors and future commercial partners, the next meaningful evidence will be efficacy results and field collaborations that turn the oral-delivery milestone into a product-development path.
